West Hill

The climb up West Hill takes about twenty minutes from Watchet, and it's one of those walks that rewards you properly. You're looking at moorland views across the Bristol Channel towards Wales, and on a clear day it genuinely takes your breath away - though that might also be the gradient.

It's basically a straightforward ascent from the town itself, no real scrambling involved, just determined uphill walking. The summit isn't fiddly or technical, which makes it ideal for families with older kids or anyone after a proper walk without the mountaineering. You'll want decent boots because the ground gets boggy and loose in places, especially after rain.

The real appeal here is how quickly you escape into actual countryside from a working seaside town. Watchet itself is small and functional rather than precious, so West Hill feels like a proper escape rather than a tourist tick-box. The coastal views matter more than any facilities on the hill itself - there aren't any, so bring water and dress for exposed moorland weather.

If you're camping in the area - Moorhouse Campsite is closest at three miles, or Haven Doniford Bay if you want something with more facilities - this works as a morning or late-afternoon outing. Two hours maximum, so it slots neatly into a holiday itinerary without eating a whole day. Go when the weather's decent; this isn't the place to visit in horizontal rain, no matter how dramatic it might look.
