St Edward the Confessor Church, Sudbrooke

The small church sits quietly in Sudbrooke, just outside Lincoln, and it's one of those places you'd drive straight past if you weren't looking for it. St Edward the Confessor is a proper medieval affair, all stone and history, with the kind of understated charm that makes Lincolnshire's countryside churches so rewarding if you bother to stop.

Inside, it's intimate rather than grand. The nave is narrow, the light comes through old windows, and there's genuine age in the fabric of the building. If you're into medieval churches - the tracery, the fonts, the sense of centuries of worship - you'll find it genuinely absorbing. For casual visitors, though, it's more of a brief stop than a destination in itself. You'll spend twenty minutes here, maybe thirty if you're thorough.

The real appeal comes when you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Seven Acre Farm or Shortferry Caravan Park are both close enough for a gentle drive. Combined with a walk around Sudbrooke village itself and a trip into Lincoln's cathedral and old town, it makes sense as part of a proper Lincolnshire exploration. Don't come out of your way specially, but if you're camping in the area and you like small medieval churches, it's absolutely worth the diversion. The countryside around here is gently rolling rather than spectacular, which makes the quiet charm of places like this feel more valuable somehow.
