St Duthus Collegiate Church

The ruins of St Duthus sit right in the heart of Tain, a town that doesn't shout about its past but absolutely should. What you're looking at is a 14th-century collegiate church - and what remains is genuinely substantial, even in its ruined state. The stone walls still stand tall enough to give you a real sense of the building's original scale, and there's something rather moving about walking through the roofless nave on a Highland afternoon.

Historically, this place mattered. St Duthus was a major pilgrimage site in medieval Scotland, and the church itself was built to honour the local saint. If you're into ecclesiastical architecture or Scottish religious history, you'll find plenty to occupy you for an hour or so - the stonework tells its own story, and the setting within the town gives it a lived-in quality rather than the isolated churchyard feel you'd get elsewhere.

It's free to visit and you can turn up whenever you fancy - the ruins aren't gated off or restricted. The real bonus is the proximity to the caravan parks dotted around Dornoch Firth. Dornoch Firth Caravan Park sits just 2.4 miles away, making this an easy excursion if you're based there with the family. You won't need more than an hour unless you're particularly keen on rubbings and photography. Winter light here is genuinely special, though the wind off the Firth can be teeth-rattling.
