St David's Church, Trallong

The drive to Trallong itself feels like half the appeal - narrow lanes winding through proper Powys countryside, past sheep and stone walls, until you spot this small medieval church sitting quietly in the valley. St David's is one of those places that works best if you're not expecting much, because the reality of it is rather lovely.

Inside, the church is straightforward and intimate. Medieval stonework, a simple altar, the kind of space where you can actually hear yourself think - which, after the relentless hum of modern life, feels genuinely restful. The church dates back centuries and sits in a pocket of Wales that hasn't changed dramatically since then, which is rather the point.

It's not a destination in itself, to be honest. You'll spend twenty minutes here, tops. But if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Cefn Cantref is excellent and only five miles away - it's a worthwhile morning walk or a quiet detour between Brecon and wherever else you're heading. The surrounding countryside is the real draw: rolling hills, clean air, and the kind of solitude you actually struggle to find.

Go on a weekday morning if you can. You'll likely have the place to yourself. The parking is basic but there's space, and admission appears to be free. Bring a notebook if you're the reflective type. This is church-visiting for people who prefer substance over spectacle.
