St Cynfarch & St Mary

Two churches sit side by side in this quiet corner of Denbighshire, near Ruthin - which is frankly odd but rather brilliant. St Cynfarch is the older of the pair, a modest medieval structure with the kind of worn stonework that speaks to centuries of Welsh worshippers. St Mary stands alongside it, a later addition that somehow doesn't feel cramped or awkward. The interiors are simple but genuine - no frills, no gift shop, just the accumulated history of a small community.

What draws people here is partly the architecture, yes, but mostly the sheer peacefulness of the setting. You're not navigating tour groups or feeling rushed. If you're into church architecture or local history, you'll find yourself lingering - the details reward close attention. Families won't find it thrilling for long, if honest, but it's a fine pause during a walk or a drive between other things in the area.

It's free to visit and worth a 20-minute detour if you're exploring Ruthin and the surrounding countryside. Late afternoon light through the windows is particularly good for photographs. Given its proximity to Clwydian Glamping Pods and Campsite just down the road, it makes an easy addition to a weekend basecamp - walk from your pod, stretch your legs, then head back for supper.
