St. Cuthbert RC Church

The red-brick Victorian interior of St. Cuthbert RC Church in Peterlee catches you off guard - all soaring arches and unexpected grandeur in what's otherwise a fairly modest post-war town. Built in the late 1800s, it's one of those Catholic churches that sprang up across County Durham when Irish families came to work the pits, and you can feel that industrial heritage in the solid, no-nonsense architecture.

Walking in, your eyes adjust to the light filtering through stained glass. The craftsmanship is genuinely lovely - nothing flashy, but proper done. The choir loft runs the length of one side, and there's real atmosphere here on a quiet weekday afternoon when you've got the place almost to yourself.

It's not a massive draw on its own - most visits run to half an hour or so - but if you're staying at The Barn at Easington just down the road, a five-minute drive away, it makes sense to pop in. Worth combining with a walk around Peterlee's town centre or heading out to the coastal path towards Crimdon. Don't expect crowds or visitor facilities. Opening hours aren't clearly advertised, so your best bet is checking locally or ringing ahead. Free to enter as far as I can tell, which is always appreciated.
