St Cross Church, Knutsford

The red sandstone tower of St Cross rises unexpectedly from Knutsford's Georgian heart, a proper landmark that catches you mid-stroll through the town centre. Built in 1742, it's a handsome piece of architecture - nothing flashy, just solid and dignified. Inside, the church is spacious and light, with decent Victorian woodwork and a calm atmosphere that makes you want to linger longer than you expected.

It's the sort of place history buffs will appreciate more than casual visitors, though anyone passing through Knutsford should probably pop their head in. The churchyard itself is worth a wander if you've got twenty minutes spare. Allow yourself forty-five minutes if you're stopping for a proper look at the interior and the surrounding graves.

There's no charge to visit, which is always welcome. The real draw if you're based in one of the nearby caravan parks - Royal Vale, Greenfields, or Woodlands - is that St Cross sits bang in the middle of Knutsford's town, so it slots neatly into a morning's exploration of the place. You won't spend hours here, but it breaks up a park-based holiday without any faffing about with driving distances.
