St Clether Holy Well

Down a muddy lane near Launceston sits one of Cornwall's most atmospheric medieval sites - a proper little time capsule that most visitors bypass entirely. St Clether Holy Well is a small 15th-century chapel built right next to a natural spring, complete with a stone well chamber where pilgrims would have come seeking healing. The chapel itself is roofless now, just granite walls and atmosphere, but the well structure below ground is remarkably intact - you can actually climb down to see where the water flows.

It's genuinely worth the detour if you're into archaeology or medieval history. Don't expect anything grand - this is archaeology in its honest form, no gift shop or interpretive boards. You get the sense of why people thought this place held something sacred. The site sits in woodland, so it's a decent walk down from the road, and honestly quite atmospheric on an overcast day.

For families with young kids it might feel a bit underwhelming after ten minutes, but anyone with even mild historical curiosity will spend longer than expected poking around the remains and imagining what pilgrimages to this remote spot must have been like. The woodland setting alone makes the trip worthwhile.
