St Clether, Chapel and Holy Well

The walk down to St Clether's chapel is half the appeal. You'll descend through proper woodland, following a stream that babbles alongside the path, until suddenly you're at a medieval chapel that feels genuinely removed from the modern world. The building itself dates back to the 15th century, with that particular Cornish grey stone that looks like it'll outlive us all.

Inside, it's sparse but atmospheric - whitewashed walls, a simple altar, the kind of quiet that makes you actually notice your breathing. What draws people here, though, is the holy well just beyond the chapel. It's not dramatic or showy. Water emerges from the ground, feeds into a small stone basin, and that's it. Medieval pilgrims believed it had healing powers. You can touch it if you want, though the water's cold enough to make you reconsider.

This works best for people who like their history understated - walkers especially, given the woodland approach from Launceston. History buffs will appreciate the medieval fabric without the tourist machinery. Kids under ten might find it a bit dull unless you frame it as an adventure through the forest. Allow 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how long you linger.

It's free and open year-round, though the walk's muddier in winter. If you're based at either Ekopod or Trewithen Farm, it's an easy morning outing that breaks up a park holiday nicely. Don't expect crowds or facilities - bring water and sensible shoes.
