St Clement's Church, Grainthorpe

The tower of St Clement's Church rises unexpectedly from the flat Lincolnshire landscape near Louth, a solid medieval reminder that this corner of the Wolds once held real importance. The church itself is 14th-century, built when wool merchants had money and faith to spend, though most of what you see today is Victorian restoration - the Victorians couldn't resist a bit of tinkering.

What makes it worth a visit is the tower. The views from up there, on a clear day, stretch across proper agricultural country toward the coast. The interior has the usual church fixtures - monuments, stained glass that's pleasant rather than spectacular, and that particular smell of old stone and polish that either appeals to you or it doesn't. There's a decent bell tower if you're into that sort of thing.

History enthusiasts will spend an hour or so looking at inscriptions and trying to work out which Lincolnshire family owned which land. Kids, if you've got them, will find it mildly interesting for about twenty minutes unless they're genuinely keen on medieval architecture. The walk around the churchyard is pleasant enough.

If you're staying at Lakeside Park or Sunnydale Holiday Park nearby, St Clement's makes an easy afternoon ramble - Louth itself is just two miles away if you want tea afterwards. Don't expect queues or facilities; this is a working parish church, not a tourist attraction. But it's free to visit and genuine, which counts for something.
