St. Catherine's Lighthouse

The lighthouse stands on Niton Down, a stubborn red and white tower that's been warning ships off the Isle of Wight's southern rocks since 1840. It's working still, so you won't get inside, but that's rather the point - you're here for the walk and the views, not a gift shop experience.

The path from Ventnor takes you up and around the clifftops, proper coastal walking that earns its payoff. On a clear day you can see across the Channel, and on most days the light catches the white chalk cliffs in a way that makes you understand why people bother with this island. The tower itself isn't enormous - it's genuinely modest compared to more famous lighthouses - but there's something satisfying about standing in front of something so straightforward in its purpose. Ships need light. This provides it. Done.

Historia types will note the Victorian engineering, the shift from open coal fires to Fresnel lenses, all that maritime heritage. But honestly, most visitors come for the walk and stay for the air. It's at least a couple of hours if you're rambling properly, longer if you're stopping to actually look at things.
