Elliot's Hill

Standing at 252 metres above sea level, this chalk downland summit offers one of the finest panoramic views on the Isle of Wight. The climb from Ventnor's Victorian streets is fairly steep but entirely manageable for most walkers - allow about 45 minutes each way from the town centre.

From the top, you'll see right across the Solent to Portsmouth and the mainland beyond. On clear days, the view stretches from the Needles in the west to Selsey Bill in the east. Below, Ventnor's tiered houses tumble down to the sea like something from a Mediterranean postcard.

Families with older children will love the sense of achievement, though it might be a bit much for little ones. The path can be muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are wise. Dawn and dusk visits are particularly rewarding when the light catches the water.

The hill is accessible year-round and completely free, making it a proper bargain compared to some of the island's paid attractions. If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like Appuldurcombe Gardens Holiday Park or Windmill Campersite, it's well worth planning a morning walk here before the day gets too warm. Just bring water - there's nothing at the top except that magnificent view.
