St. Cathen's Church, Llangathen

You'll find this small rural church tucked into the Carmarthenshire countryside just outside Llandeilo, surrounded by fields and the kind of quiet that makes you actually notice birdsong. St. Cathen's is a proper working parish church with medieval bones - the sort of place where time moves differently and nobody seems to mind if you wander in to have a look around.

It's genuinely intimate rather than grand. Medieval stonework, simple interior, the kind of building that tells you far more about how people actually worshipped than some vast cathedral ever could. You're looking at a couple of hours if you're interested in church architecture or local history, thirty minutes if you're just passing through.

Families won't find it thrilling - there's no interactive displays or gift shop - but older kids studying medieval Wales will get something real from it. History types and church enthusiasts will appreciate the authenticity of the place. It's the sort of stop that works brilliantly if you're already exploring the Towy Valley rather than a destination in itself.

Parking is roadside and basic. There's no official admission charge that I'm aware of, though it's worth leaving a donation if you get inside. The glamping and caravan parks scattered around the area - Ravenscroft Retreats is closest at just over a mile away - make this a natural addition to a proper walking holiday in the valley. Worth the small detour if you're in Llandeilo already.
