St Buryan Church

The churchyard sits on a hilltop between Penzance and Land's End, and it's genuinely one of those places that stops you mid-walk. St Buryan Church is medieval Cornwall at its most unpretentious - a proper working parish church with a tower that's been guiding seafarers for centuries. The stone is weathered, the interior is cool and contemplative, and there's something about the light through those old windows that makes you want to sit down for twenty minutes whether you're religious or not.

The graveyard is worth a wander too. You'll find names of mining families, fishermen, and locals going back generations - the kind of thing that puts a place into context when you're staying nearby. If you're based at Roselands or Lands End Camping and Glamping (both within easy driving distance), this is a cracking spot to break up a drive toward the coast or to explore on foot if you're in a walking mood.

It won't take long - maybe half an hour including the churchyard - but it's the sort of quiet, uneventful visit that families sometimes need when there's been too much beach time and too much noise. The church is usually open during daylight hours and admission is free. Architecturally it's solid rather than showy, but that's exactly why locals care about it. Not every day out needs drama.
