St Bridget's Church, Morvah

The granite walls of St Bridget's Church rise out of the moorland near Porthmeor like they've grown there for centuries - which they largely have. This is proper old Cornwall, the kind of place where you half expect to see a Cornish saint emerge from the mist rather than a coach party.

The church itself is small, medieval, and completely unpretentious. Inside, the woodwork is genuinely interesting if you're into that sort of thing - ornate screens and carvings that speak to a time when even a remote moorland parish had the means and craftsmanship to do things properly. The setting is the real draw though. You're surrounded by open moor, the land rolling away in all directions, and the sense of isolation is genuine rather than manufactured.

It's not a long stop - forty minutes covers it if you're thorough - but it works brilliantly as part of a wider walk around this stretch of the Cornish interior. Roselands Caravan Camping Park sits just 3.5 miles away, making it an easy detour while you're exploring the area. The church itself sits off the beaten path enough that you won't find crowds, though that also means checking opening times beforehand wouldn't go amiss.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile. Families with young kids might struggle to justify a special trip, but if you're already rambling in the moorland around Porthmeor, there's real value in seeking it out. The walk to get here is often as rewarding as the destination itself.
