Lanyon Quoit

A granite portal tomb from around 3500 BC, Lanyon Quoit sits alone on moorland near Porthmeor and stops you dead when you round the corner. Four massive upright stones support a 18-tonne capstone tilted at an angle - it's genuinely impressive, the sort of thing that makes you wonder how Bronze Age people moved it without modern kit. You can walk right up to it, touch the stones, circle it. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just the thing itself against the sky.

The setting's what gets you. It's isolated, windswept, proper moorland - the kind of place where you feel small. Walkers love it because it's accessible but still requires effort to reach, and the views across the moors are genuinely good. Families with older kids will find it interesting for about twenty minutes, then they'll get bored and want to move on. Archaeology enthusiasts could spend longer here pondering the people who built it, though honestly there's not much detail available on site.

Free to visit, open all hours since it's just standing in a field. Allow thirty minutes to an hour including the walk from the car park. Spring and autumn are best - less tourists, clearer light for photos. The moorland setting means it can be wet and muddy underfoot, so proper boots matter. If you're staying at Roselands Caravan Camping Park or Polmanter Touring Park nearby, it's a decent half-day outing between exploring the coast. Worth the trip if you're into Bronze Age remains, less so if you're just after something to fill an hour.
