St Brannock's Well Church

Saxon stones and Norman arches tell the story of one of Devon's oldest places of worship, where St Brannock supposedly founded a church in the 6th century after following a divine vision of a sow and her piglets. The present building dates largely from the 13th century, though fragments of much earlier stonework peek through if you know where to look.

Inside, the atmosphere feels properly ancient - low beamed ceilings and worn flagstones speak of centuries of village worship. Look for the carved stone depicting St Brannock's legendary sow, a delightfully quirky detail that sets this church apart from the usual Norman fare. The font is particularly fine, with intricate carvings that have survived remarkably well.

History enthusiasts will find plenty to ponder here, though families might struggle to hold younger children's attention for more than twenty minutes. The churchyard offers lovely views across the surrounding countryside, making it worth combining with a coastal walk from nearby Ilfracombe.

It's a five-minute stop rather than a destination in itself, but perfectly placed for those staying at Woolacombe Sands Holiday Park or the other coastal sites around Ilfracombe. The church usually remains open during daylight hours, though it's worth checking locally if you're making a special journey.
