Stoneyard Wood

Oak and beech canopy towers overhead in this proper woodland stretch just outside Ilfracombe, where public footpaths wind through what feels like a forgotten corner of North Devon. The trees here are mature specimens - some easily a century old - creating that cathedral-like atmosphere you get in well-established English woodlands.

Families with energetic kids will find plenty to explore, though the paths can get muddy after rain so wellies are wise. Dog walkers seem to love it here too, and you'll likely have the place largely to yourself except on sunny weekends. The woodland doesn't have any formal facilities or interpretation boards - it's just trees, paths, and birdsong.

Budget about an hour for a decent wander, though you could easily stretch it to two if you're the type who enjoys identifying different species or just sitting quietly on a fallen log. Free access as far as I can tell, which makes it a nice contrast to some of the pricier attractions around Ilfracombe.

Location-wise, it works well if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Hidden Valley or Golden Coast. After a morning on Woolacombe's busy beaches, this woodland offers a peaceful change of pace without driving far. Just don't expect anything too dramatic - it's lovely but hardly the New Forest.
