St. Barnabas Church, Great Strickland, Cumbria

The churchyard sits quietly off the main road through Great Strickland, a village that doesn't announce itself. St. Barnabas is a proper little medieval church - 12th century if the stonework is anything to go by - and it's the kind of place where you genuinely feel like you've stumbled on something nobody else has bothered with.

Inside, it's austere in that way old Cumbrian churches are. Stone flags, simple pews, a good roof that's held up for centuries. The real draw is the view across open countryside from the graveyard - you're perched at the edge of the fell country here, with Penrith a few miles south and the Lake District's outer reaches rising beyond. It's a five-minute wander round the stones if you're curious about old epitaphs, longer if you just want to sit and stare at the landscape.

This isn't a Sunday service destination unless you're local. It's more for walkers dropping by during a Pennine Way jaunt or families camping nearby at Howdy Glamping (barely half a mile away) looking for a quiet stop between bigger attractions. The village itself is unremarkable - a handful of farms, a road junction - but that's rather the point. There's no cafe, no gift shop, no interpretive panels. Just a church that's been doing its job since medieval times.

Allow 15-20 minutes maximum if you're passing through. Free to visit. It works best combined with a proper walk up onto the fells or as a pause between Penrith and the Lake District proper.
