St Audrie's Waterfall

The waterfall at St Audrie's isn't what you'd call dramatic - it's more a modest cascade tumbling down red sandstone cliffs near Watchet, but that's rather the appeal. You'll find it on the coastal path between Watchet and Lilstock, a short walk that rewards you with something genuinely unexpected on the Somerset coast.

It's free to visit, obviously, since it's just part of the landscape. The actual fall itself takes five minutes to reach from the road, though the real walk becomes the stretch along the clifftop beforehand. Bring proper shoes - the path gets boggy and the descent is a bit steep for what it is.

Families with older children will get the most from this. Little ones under five will find the short walk dull, to be honest, and the waterfall itself isn't high enough to thrill anyone looking for Niagara Falls in miniature. Walkers and geology types are your people here - the red cliffs themselves are far more interesting than the water.

Allow 45 minutes if you're just doing the waterfall and returning. An hour and a half if you fancy extending along the coastal path toward Lilstock. The best time is after heavy rain when there's actual flow, rather than visiting in August when it's barely a trickle.
