St Annes RC Church

The red brick Victorian church that dominates Atherstone's skyline took me by surprise - proper handsome building, that. St Annes RC Church isn't tucked away in some quiet village backwater either; it's right there in the heart of town, which means you can easily pop in between a browse round the High Street and a coffee at one of the local cafes.

Inside, the craftsmanship is what gets you. The Victorian architects didn't do half measures, and the interior detailing rewards a proper look around - ornate plasterwork, decent stained glass, the kind of thing that makes you understand why people bothered building like this. It's a working church, so visiting hours can be a bit unpredictable, but popping your head round the door during daylight hours usually works.

If you're staying at Lime Tree Caravan Park or Ettie's Field - both within easy reach - this is absolutely worth the short drive into Atherstone. Won't take more than 45 minutes to have a proper look, maybe longer if you're into architectural detail. History enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates solid Victorian craftsmanship will get something out of it. Families with young kids might find it a bit static unless they're already church-curious.

It's free to wander in, which is the right price, really. Best visited midweek when it's quieter, and bring a camera if you're keen on Victorian architecture - the exterior photography is cracking on a decent day.
