St Anne's Church, Whitstone

The church sits tucked away in Whitstone, a proper rural pocket of North Cornwall just inland from Bude. St Anne's is a medieval parish church with that solid, no-nonsense granite construction you get throughout this part of the world - the sort of building that's weathered five centuries of Atlantic gales without flinching.

Inside, it's modest but genuine. You'll find the usual fixtures - an old font, some decent windows - but what strikes you most is the quiet. There's no twee gift shop or visitor board, just a working village church that locals still use. The churchyard's worth a wander too, with headstones that tell you something about who lived here and what they did.

This isn't a cathedral or a tourist honey pot. Walkers heading inland from the Bude coast will pass through easily enough, and it makes sense as a stop-off if you're exploring the quieter lanes around here rather than sticking to the beaches. History types will appreciate it for what it is - a window into rural Cornish life rather than anything spectacular.

If you're based at Wooda Farm or Bude Camping and Caravanning Club Site, you're close enough for an afternoon explore. Allow half an hour, maybe an hour if you sit and read the plaques. The real appeal is the landscape around it - rolling farmland, proper countryside - so come when the light's decent and the rain's holding off.
