St Anne's Church, Haverthwaite

The church sits quietly in Haverthwaite village, a modest stone building that most people driving past on the A590 probably miss entirely. St Anne's has that particular appeal of rural Cumbrian churches - no crowds, no gift shop, just good honest architecture and a bit of local history tucked away in the pews.

Inside you'll find the sort of calm that only happens when a place isn't trying too hard. The churchyard itself is worth a wander if you're into old gravestones, which tell you quite a bit about who lived and worked in this valley. It's the kind of stop that appeals to walkers tackling the Lakeland fells - a proper reason to pause rather than just sitting in a café.

If you're staying at Newby Bridge Country Caravan Park or Hill of Oaks just down the road, St Anne's makes an easy leg-stretch on a morning before heading into the Lakes proper. Give it twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're the type to read everything. Kids won't be gripped unless they're already keen on churchyard spotting, so don't expect them to linger.

The village itself is quiet - no facilities right next door - so you'll want a base sorted before you visit. But that's rather the point of it. It's the sort of church you'll be glad you saw once you're inside, and you won't begrudge the detour from the A590.
