St. Anne’s Church, Derby

Walking down the narrow street towards St. Anne's in Derby's city centre, you're stepping back into the 16th century. This Grade I listed church is one of Derby's finest medieval structures, all soaring ceilings and intricate stonework that somehow survived the Blitz. The interior is genuinely impressive - high nave, beautiful windows, and that particular smell of old wood and stone that proper ancient churches have.

It's brilliant for architecture buffs and anyone interested in how religious buildings shaped English towns. You don't need more than 45 minutes inside unless you're really into the detail of it all, but it's free to visit and the staff are knowledgeable if you catch them. Go on a weekday morning if you want some peace to actually look around without school groups rushing through.

Derby itself is underrated - the cathedral's nearby and the town centre's walkable. If you're camping at Hill Farm, just four or five miles out, this makes an easy half-day detour. Pair it with the museums on the Strand and you've got a solid cultural morning sorted. The church closes early on Sundays depending on services, so check ahead. Not flashy, but genuinely worth an hour of your time if medieval churches are your thing.
