St Andrews

The church sits right in the heart of Oakham, a solid medieval structure that commands respect without shouting about it. St Andrews is proper old - we're talking 12th century foundations - and you can read that history in its stonework if you know what to look for. The interior is what gets you though. The nave opens up with real presence, and there's genuine craftsmanship in the details: carved roof bosses, decent stained glass, that particular smell of ancient stone and polish that you only get in churches that matter.

It's the kind of place history enthusiasts will linger in for a good hour, picking out the Victorian additions from the original work, studying the monuments. Kids under ten will probably get restless after twenty minutes unless they're the type who likes hunting for carved faces in the stonework. If you're staying at Greendale Farm Caravan & Camping Park just outside town, it's barely six miles back, making it an easy afternoon jaunt combined with a wander around Oakham town centre.

Free entry as far as I can tell, which is always welcome. The real value here isn't in any single showpiece - it's understanding how ordinary medieval architecture shaped England. If you're the sort who notices load-bearing walls and buttresses, you'll get more from it than someone just ticking boxes. Worth thirty minutes if you're passing through Oakham anyway.
