St Andrew's, Redlingfield

The church sits quietly on the edge of Redlingfield, a village most people drive straight through on the way to somewhere else. St Andrew's is the sort of place that rewards a quick stop if you're passing through Suffolk's rolling countryside - nothing flashy, just proper medieval work done right.

Inside, the nave opens up with the kind of calm that makes you drop your voice without thinking. There's a fifteenth-century hammerbeam roof that's genuinely impressive - the sort of carpentry that reminds you why people built these buildings to last centuries. The windows aren't showstoppers, but they let light fall across the pews in that particular way that only old churches manage.

It's not a day-trip destination on its own. But if you're staying at Savage Glamping nearby - which does look proper lovely - or exploring Eye and the quieter corners of Suffolk, twenty minutes here won't go amiss. History types will appreciate the medieval bones of the building. Families won't find much to occupy young kids for long, but older children who actually read information plaques might get something from it.

The churchyard's worth a wander too. The stone work and grave markers tell their own story, and there's usually a bench if you fancy sitting down with a coffee from wherever you've driven from.

No entry fee that I'm aware of - it's one of those churches that opens during daylight. Check before you travel, though. East Anglia's full of these quieter medieval churches; St Andrew's is solid without being unmissable.
