St Andrew's RC Cathedral

The red sandstone bulk of St Andrew's rises unexpectedly from the Tayport skyline, a Victorian statement that you can't miss from the road. It's a proper Catholic cathedral - all soaring arches, stained glass, and that particular hush that comes with stone buildings built to impress. The exterior alone rewards a walk around it; the masonry work is detailed enough that you'll spot new things on a second look.

Inside, the space opens up considerably. Ornate plasterwork catches the light, and if you time it right during services, the acoustics are genuinely moving. It's not a sprawling complex like some English cathedrals - you can take it in within an hour - but that's rather the point. There's a clarity to the design that feels intentional.

This works best for anyone with an interest in Victorian religious architecture or Scottish Catholic history. Kids will manage it fine for thirty minutes or so, though there's not much to hold their attention beyond the visual spectacle. The setting in Tayport itself is straightforward - industrial round the edges, but the cathedral commands respect regardless.

If you're staying at Tayport Links or Larick Campsite nearby, it's an easy visit between beach walks or exploring the Fife coast proper. Free to enter as far as I could tell, though it's worth checking ahead. Not a day's activity on its own, but absolutely worth the diversion if you're in the area.
