St Andrew's Church, North Pickenham

The church sits quietly in the Norfolk countryside just east of Swaffham, a solid flint structure that's been weathering East Anglian winters since medieval times. St Andrew's isn't flashy - no soaring spire or ornate tracery - but that's rather the point. What you get here is the real thing: a working parish church with genuine character worn into its walls.

Inside, the roof catches most people's attention. It's a proper timber roof with carved wooden panels, the kind of detail that makes you pause and actually look up instead of scrolling on your phone. There's medieval stained glass too, fragments that have survived centuries of neglect and restoration. The font's Norman, which means it's been here through the whole lot - plague, Reformation, Civil War, the lot.

This works best if you're already out walking the Norfolk countryside or based nearby at Breckland Meadows Caravan Park. Don't expect crowds. You might find it locked on a random Tuesday, which is frustrating but also tells you something about how quiet this corner of Norfolk really is. Ring ahead if you want to be certain of getting in. The graveyard's worth a wander regardless - proper old headstones, peaceful as they come.

Allot maybe thirty to forty minutes here, longer if you're into church architecture. It's not a destination in itself, but if you're exploring the villages around Swaffham, it's absolutely worth the detour. Real village church, no tourist polish, genuinely worth seeing.
