St Andrew's Church, Calstock

The granite tower of St Andrew's rises sharply above Calstock village like something from a medieval postcard, visible for miles across the Tamar Valley. Walk up to the churchyard and you're standing at one of Devon's finest examples of a 15th-century church, all soaring perpendicular Gothic windows and proper craftsmanship.

Inside, it's genuinely impressive - the wagon roof is intricate timber work, and there's enough detail in the stonework to keep you occupied for a solid half-hour if you're into that sort of thing. The church sits right on the riverside, which means the setting itself is half the draw. On a decent day, the views down to the Tamar are splendid.

It's free to visit and there's no formal opening hours nonsense - just turn up during daylight. Most people spend 20 minutes here, maybe 45 if you're thorough. It works brilliantly as a stop on a walking route rather than a destination in itself, though the riverside location and churchyard are lovely for a proper sit-down.

If you're based at Woodovis or Sunnyside Eco Glamping nearby - both just a few miles away - it's an easy half-hour drive from Tavistock. Walkers and architecture enthusiasts will get the most from it. Families with restless kids might find it a bit dry unless they're genuinely interested in old buildings. The real pleasure here is the combination of good stone craftsmanship and that valley setting.
