About St Andrews Castle Visitor Centre
What makes it worthwhile is seeing the actual bottle dungeon - a pit carved into the rock where prisoners were literally dropped in and left. You can walk down into it yourself, which brings home just how grim medieval justice was. The views from the castle grounds across the bay are excellent, especially on a clear day when you can see right up the Fife coast.
It's not a massive time commitment - most people spend 90 minutes here, maybe two hours if you're thorough. History buffs will find it genuinely interesting, and kids old enough to understand the darker stories (eight or nine onwards) tend to engage with it. Younger children might find it a bit bleak and empty.
If you're based at St Andrews Holiday Park or Craigtoun Meadows, the castle is basically on your doorstep - brilliant for a morning visit before heading into town for lunch. Cairnsmill is slightly further out, but still an easy drive. Winter afternoons can be quite moody and atmospheric here, though the Scottish wind is relentless. Go in decent weather if you can.
