St Andrew, Kirby Grindalythe

The church sits quietly in Kirby Grindalythe village, a few miles south of Malton, and it's the kind of place that rewards a small detour if you're wandering the Yorkshire Wolds. St Andrew is a working parish church - nothing pretentious about it - with some genuinely interesting medieval stonework tucked inside. The chancel and nave show real age, and if the door's open (it often is), you'll find decent examples of 13th and 14th century craftsmanship that don't need a guide book to appreciate.

It's best for people who actually care about old churches rather than treating them as a tourist tick-box. If you're doing the Wolds Walk Glamping circuit or based at one of the nearby sites like Yorkshire Wolds Glamping, this makes sense as a quiet morning walk from the car park - give it half an hour inside, then crack on. The village itself is tiny, so you won't find shops or cafes, but that's rather the point. Admission should be free (it's a parish church), though there's usually a donation box if you want to support the upkeep.

The real appeal is the stillness of it. You'll rarely have company, and the surrounding countryside - proper rolling Wolds terrain - is what makes the journey worthwhile.
