Sledmere Monument

A towering chalk monument rises unexpectedly from the rolling Yorkshire Wolds landscape near Malton - you'll spot it from miles away, which rather defeats the purpose of a hidden anything. Sledmere Monument stands 120 feet high and commemorates Sir Tatton Sykes, a 19th-century landowner who transformed the local area. It's a proper odd sight, frankly: this giant obelisk planted in open countryside where you'd least expect grand gestures.

Walking up to it takes twenty minutes or so from the nearest lane, depending on the state of the ground. The views from the base sweep across the Wolds - proper cracking, especially on clear days when you can see for miles. History enthusiasts will appreciate the Sykes family story, though it's not the most gripping tale if you're being honest. Kids might enjoy the walk and scramble, but there's not much to do once you arrive except look at it, take photos, and turn back.

The monument works best as part of a wider Wolds walking day rather than a destination in itself. Free to visit, naturally - it's just standing there. Allow an hour if you're coming specifically, including the walk from the car. Early autumn is lovely here when the chalk grassland gets interesting.

Stay at Yorkshire Wolds Glamping or East End Farm Campsite (both within five miles) and pair this with walks around the estate. Malton makes a decent base for supplies and lunch. It's the sort of place that rewards being local, not driving hours to see.
