St Allen's Church

St Allen's Church sits in that quiet corner of mid-Cornwall where you'd almost stumble past it if you weren't looking. Near Trevalsa, it's the sort of place where the pace drops immediately - no crowds, no gift shop, just a proper country church doing what it's done for centuries.

The building itself tells you everything about rural Cornwall. Medieval stonework, that particular worn quality that comes from genuine age rather than renovation. Inside, the light does something special - comes through old windows at angles that make you understand why people bothered building these places at all. You're looking at something real here, not a museum piece.

This works brilliantly as a walking break if you're staying at any of the nearby parks - Monkey Tree, The Beeches, or Wrinklers Wood are all within a few miles. The kind of stop you make between longer walks, somewhere to sit quietly for ten minutes. History types will appreciate the architecture; families with restless kids might find it feels too still, too quiet. There's no visitor centre nonsense, which is either exactly what you want or slightly frustrating depending on your mood.

Best visited on a weekday morning when you won't share it with anyone. Admission appears free - it's a working church, not a ticketed attraction. Allow maybe 20 minutes unless you're genuinely into medieval ecclesiastical detail, in which case longer. Worth the detour if you're in the area, certainly not worth planning a day around.
