St Aidan's Church

The churchyard sits quiet on the edge of Carlisle, with St Aidan's itself a solid Victorian effort that won't knock your socks off from the outside. But step through the door and there's real substance here - the interior has genuine character, with proper stained glass and the kind of peaceful atmosphere you actually want from a church visit rather than the tourist-trap nonsense some places have become.

It's worth an hour if you're into ecclesiastical architecture or just need a moment's calm during a Cumbrian break. The churchyard itself is pleasant for a wander, and it makes a reasonable pit stop if you're exploring Carlisle itself. Families with young kids might get restless after twenty minutes, but if they're into old buildings it could work.

Admission appears to be free, though do check locally as these things vary. The nearest caravan parks - Green Acres is barely three miles away, and both Englethwaite Hall and Thornfield are within six miles - make this an easy inclusion in a wider Cumbrian holiday without any real detour required. Spring or early autumn are your best bets, when the churchyard's at its least gloomy. Don't expect grandeur, but if you're stopping in the area anyway, it's a solid twenty-minute diversion that won't disappoint.
