A tiny stone chapel sits alone on the Northumberland moors, and it's genuinely moving in a way that surprises you. The chapel marks where St Aidan supposedly rested on his travels between Lindisfarne and the mainland around 650 AD. Whether that's historically spot-on or pious legend doesn't really matter once you're standing inside. There's something about the remoteness that gets under your skin. The walk here from the nearest carpark is short but exposed - maybe fifteen minutes across open moorland - so go on a decent day or you'll be soaked through.
