Sruth Ban Falls

The walk to Sruth Ban Falls takes you through proper Argyll woodland, and it's genuinely worth the effort. Located near Cairndow, this waterfall isn't the sort of dramatic drop you'll find on postcards - it's more intimate than that, with water tumbling down a series of rocky shelves before pooling below. The setting is what gets you though. Ancient trees, the sound of water, that particular Scottish Highlands light filtering through the canopy.

You'll need decent boots. The path can be boggy even days after rain, and there's a river crossing that's straightforward in dry spells but requires care when water levels are up. Allow a couple of hours return from the car park - it's not strenuous, just steady. Families with reasonably confident walkers will manage it fine; toddlers might find it slow going. The falls themselves are free to visit, naturally, and there's a small lay-by near Cairndow to leave the car.

This works perfectly as a morning activity if you're staying at Drimsynie Holiday Village - only a few miles away and a proper break from the typical park routine. Spring is best when water flow is generous, though summer visits mean you won't be sodden by the time you get back. Avoid immediately after heavy rain unless you enjoy a genuinely challenging river ford. It's not a destination in itself, but slotted into a long weekend exploring Loch Fyne and the surrounding glens, it's the sort of detour that sticks with you.
