Sron Aonaich

The climb up Sron Aonaich rewards you with views across Loch Lomond that justify the leg work. This isn't a massive peak - it sits at around 360 metres - but the perspective you get of the loch and the surrounding mountains makes it well worth the afternoon.

You'll start from near Alexandria and gain height steadily through woodland before breaking out onto open ground. The path is rough in places, a bit muddy after rain, but nothing technical. Most walkers hit the summit in about two hours depending on fitness. The view back down the loch towards the southern end is proper striking, especially on a clear day when you can pick out Ben Lomond to the east.

This is ideal for keen walkers who want something achievable without a full day commitment. Families with older kids could manage it, though younger ones might find the push a slog. On busy weekends, you'll have company near the top - it's popular locally.

If you're based at Inverbeg Holiday Park just down the road, Sron Aonaich makes a perfect morning or afternoon walk to break up your stay. The proximity to Alexandria means you're not spending half your day driving. Milarrochy Bay is a bit further out but still within easy reach if you fancy combining this with a lakeside pitch. The walk itself is free, and there's parking near the trailhead. Allow three to four hours return, depending on how long you loiter at the top.
