Sròn nan Eun

The walk up Sròn nan Eun near Crianlarich is a proper workout, but the reward at the top makes the effort worthwhile. This Scottish peak isn't particularly high - just under 900 metres - but it feels significantly taller thanks to the steep, unrelenting climb through woodland and open moorland. What you get is a view across the Trossachs that genuinely stops you mid-breath. On a clear day, the vistas stretch for miles, with Ben Vorlich and Ben Vane rising nearby and the valleys below striped with forestry and farmland.

It's an ideal outing if you're staying at Tyndrum Holiday Park and want to escape the caravan site for a proper half-day adventure. Most walkers allow three to four hours return, though that depends on fitness and how many times you stop to admire the scenery. The terrain is straightforward - no scrambling required - but it's relentlessly uphill on the way up, which means knackered legs on the descent.

Families with younger children might find it a slog, and there's little reward for stopping halfway. It's really for walkers who don't mind a grim grind in exchange for landscape views. The path can be boggy in wet weather, and cloud cover here descends fast, so check the forecast before heading out. There's no charge and no facilities at the summit, so bring water and something to eat. The nearest town of Crianlarich is about 3 miles away if you need supplies beforehand.
