Sròn na Saobhaidhe

The walk up Sròn na Saobhaidhe is proper steep, and it announces itself from Ardgay without apology. This Highland peak sits at 694 metres, which doesn't sound enormous until you're halfway up the slope and your legs are reminding you why Scottish mountains demand respect.

It's a straightforward hike rather than a technical climb. The ascent follows a clear path that gains height relentlessly, with the surrounding landscape gradually shrinking beneath your feet. On a clear day, the views stretch across the Highlands - proper worth the huffing and puffing. Walkers usually allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on fitness, though the actual summit is a modest rocky outcrop rather than some dramatic peak.

This one rewards hill walkers who don't need fancy scrambles or exposure. Families with older kids and decent boots can manage it, though younger children might find the grind tedious. Winter conditions make it considerably trickier, so stick to late spring through early autumn.

From Ardgay, it's straightforward enough to reach, and if you're based at Ardgay Glamping - the site five-odd miles away - you've got a solid half-day expedition on your doorstep. It's the sort of hike that clears your head without requiring an early start or months of training. The Highlands are full of bigger draws, but this one delivers proper mountain air and solitude in equal measure.
