Sròn a' Chrò

That pointed peak you spot from Pitlochry town centre - the one that looks deceptively close but somehow takes forever to reach - that's Sròn a' Chrò. It's a proper hill walk rather than a stroll, and the 2,651 feet climb from town will take most people three to four hours there and back, depending on fitness and how many times you stop to catch your breath.

The approach winds through woodland before opening onto moorland, and on a clear day the views from the top stretch across the Tummel Valley and beyond. It's not the highest peak around Pitlochry by a long shot, but it's the kind of walk that delivers genuine reward without needing mountaineering experience. The path is reasonably well-trodden though it can get boggy after rain.

This is squarely a walkers' hill. Families with young legs will manage it fine, but little ones will struggle. History buffs won't find much up there beyond the landscape itself - it's all about the exercise and the panorama. Allow a full half-day if you're starting from Pitlochry, more if you fancy a leisurely pace with picnic breaks.

If you're staying at Blair Castle Caravan Park - a solid base with decent facilities just 5.6 miles south - Sròn a' Chrò makes an excellent morning or early afternoon outing. The walk leaves you back in time for tea. Given how many hills crowd this part of Perthshire, it's worth doing if you're in the area, though it's not the kind of peak you'd plan a trip around on its own.
