Dun site

A dun is essentially an Iron Age fort - a circular or oval stone structure that once served as a defensive settlement or chieftain's stronghold. The Dun site near Pitlochry is one of Scotland's archaeological treasures, though it requires a bit of detective work to find and demands comfortable shoes to reach it.

What you get is the remains of ancient stone walls, often dramatic in their setting on a hillside or strategic vantage point. Standing there, you can almost picture the settlement as it was two thousand years ago - families living within those walls, smoke rising from cooking fires, lookouts scanning the valley below for trouble. There's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, so come prepared with some background reading if you want the full story.

This is firmly for history buffs and serious walkers rather than casual tourists. If you're the sort who gets genuinely excited about understanding how Iron Age people lived and defended themselves, you'll find it worthwhile. Kids might struggle unless they're already interested in archaeology - a hillside full of old stones doesn't compete with a theme park.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - River Tilt Park, Blair Castle, or Faskally Woods are all within a couple of miles - it makes sense as a morning expedition before lunch. Pitlochry itself is well-stocked with cafes and shops, so you can combine it with a proper day out. Allow two to three hours total, including the walk up and time to poke about the ruins.
