Old Bridge of Tilt

A crumbling stone arch spanning the River Tilt near Pitlochry, this bridge is genuinely old - we're talking centuries here, though exactly how many depends on which local you ask. The structure itself is modest, frankly, and you won't spend more than twenty minutes examining it properly. What makes it worth a diversion is the walk to reach it. The river here is proper lovely, with woodland on either side and decent views back towards the Pass of Killiecrankie. History types will appreciate standing on something that's genuinely ancient rather than Victorian restoration work. Families with older kids will find the scramble down to the bridge engaging enough, though younger ones might lose interest quickly once they realise there's no gift shop or interpretation board. The real pull is the setting itself - it's the sort of spot where you can sit on a rock, eat a sandwich, and feel like you've found something beyond the beaten track. Allow an hour if you're walking from Pitlochry town, less if you drive closer and tackle just the final stretch. Go in the morning if possible to avoid the afternoon crowds heading up towards the Pass. If you're basing yourself at Blair Castle Caravan Park just down the road, this makes a decent leg-stretcher on a day when the weather's decent but you can't quite face a full Highland walk.
