Square's Wood

Square's Wood sits just outside Croston, a proper Lancashire woodland that's easy to overlook if you're not looking for it. It's the kind of place locals know and tourists miss - dense trees, decent paths, and enough green to feel like you've actually escaped even though you're barely five minutes from the village.

The walking here is straightforward rather than spectacular. You'll find yourself on fairly well-trodden trails through mixed woodland, nothing technically challenging but genuinely pleasant on a dry day. The canopy's thick enough to keep things cool in summer, which counts for something when you're camping nearby at Royal Umpire just over a mile away.

Families with younger kids might get an hour out of it comfortably. Older children keen on longer woodland walks could easily combine this with other local spots. If you're the type who enjoys a gentle ramble without needing dramatic views or heritage plaques every fifty metres, you'll find it worth a morning visit.

Timing-wise, go early if you value solitude, and avoid peak summer holidays unless you're happy dodging other families. There's something straightforward about it - no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just wood and paths. That's either its charm or its weakness depending on what you want from a woodland walk.

For those based at one of the nearby caravan parks, it's a convenient leg-stretch without requiring the drive to grander attractions. Pair it with a walk around Croston village itself and you've got a decent half-day sorted.
