The water here is completely still on a calm day - mirror-like in a way that makes you forget you're barely five miles from Doncaster town centre. Sprotbrough Flash is a glacial lake that's been around since the Ice Age, and it shows. The whole thing feels removed from the suburban sprawl, even though you can hear traffic if you listen hard enough.

It's genuinely good for a couple of hours of poking about. The walking is easy - flat paths loop around the water's edge, making it ideal for families who don't fancy anything strenuous, and anyone with binoculars will find plenty to occupy them. Birdwatchers get genuinely excited about this place. Great crested grebes nest here, and in winter you'll see dabchucks and pochard if the weather's been cold enough. Summer brings dragonflies thick enough to be annoying if you're trying to take photos.

The lake sits within a nature reserve, so there's a proper sense of being somewhere managed and cared for, even if the visitor facilities are minimal. It's free to visit and open during daylight hours - no gates, no hassle. Allow an hour for a casual circuit, longer if you're serious about spotting things.

If you're based at Sunnyview Touring Park or Hooton Lodge Farm, this makes a solid half-day stop. Not a destination in itself, but the kind of place that rounds out a week in South Yorkshire nicely. Peaceful without being dull, and the light across the water at late afternoon is properly special.
