Spring Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured tourist trap, Spring Wood sits east of Ipswich and gives you the real Suffolk forest experience - tall pines, tangled undergrowth, the works. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which around here is increasingly rare. The woodland floor changes with the seasons: muddy and alive in autumn, boggy after rain, reasonably dry come summer if you're lucky.

Walkers will get the most from it, especially those who want to escape the caravan parks without venturing far from accommodation. You can spend a solid hour here, longer if you're the type to identify birds or just sit on a fallen log and watch the light filter through the canopy. Kids tend to enjoy it for the first half hour, then start asking how much longer - the novelty of trees is finite at that age, to be honest.

It's free and accessible, though you'll want proper walking boots after wet weather. The nearest holiday parks - Suffolk Steel House, Priory Park, and The Lost Garden Retreat are all within four miles, making Spring Wood a realistic leg-stretch option if you're based at any of them. Go early morning if you can; you'll have the place almost entirely to yourself, and the wildlife's more active anyway. It won't blow your mind, but it's authentic Essex-Suffolk borderland woodland, and sometimes that's exactly what you need.
