Spoil tip

Spoil Tip rises abruptly from the moorland south of South Brent, a distinctive cone that catches the eye long before you realise what it actually is. This isn't some ancient natural peak - it's the legacy of tin mining, a great heap of waste rock that's been colonising by hardy grasses and gorse over the decades. The walk up takes about twenty minutes from the moorland below, and the views across Dartmoor open out properly once you're at the top. You get South Brent and the surrounding valleys spread out below, with clear days giving you proper long-distance sight lines across the moor.

It's the kind of spot that appeals to moorland walkers and anyone interested in industrial heritage without needing the full museum experience. Kids tend to enjoy the scramble up and the modest sense of achievement that comes from reaching the summit. There's something oddly satisfying about a viewpoint that's also a piece of local history - you're literally standing on evidence of what made this area tick a century ago.

The attraction is free and unrestricted, though there's no marked visitor infrastructure. Allow an hour including the walk and a proper look around from the top. Best visited as part of a wider moorland ramble rather than a dedicated trip - it works well if you're staying at Ashbourne Woods or Dartmoor Domes and fancy a morning out on foot. Conditions underfoot can be boggy after rain, so decent footwear matters. Go midweek if you can - weekends bring more moorland traffic.
