Sperrin MX

The Sperrins rise up from the landscape near Omagh in their own quiet way - no fanfare, just proper mountains that take your breath when you see them properly for the first time. Sperrin MX is the nature reserve that protects this upland area, and it's the sort of place where you actually get to walk without bumping into crowds. Heather moorland, blanket bog, and streams carving through valleys - it's raw and honest terrain.

Walkers will find themselves here most naturally. The Sperrin Way traces a path through the reserve, and there are proper routes for all levels, whether you're after an afternoon amble or a full day's hike with a packed lunch. You'll spot mountain hares and red grouse if you're lucky, and the views across the Tyrone and Derry landscapes are genuinely worth the effort. Winter can be grim up here - wind comes straight off the Atlantic - but spring and early summer turn it into something special.

It's free to access, which is one of the best things about it. No visitor centre, no gift shop nonsense. You just turn up and go. Plan for at least two hours if you're doing a decent walk; half the appeal is going at your own pace and letting the silence do its work.
