Head to the edge of Burton-on-Trent and you'll find Speakers Corner - a modest patch of public ground with genuine historical bite. This is where public speech, debate and protest have happened for decades, a proper open-air forum where locals have stood up and voiced their thoughts on everything from politics to religion to local grievances.

It's not dramatic or monumental. There's no grand stone plinth, no statuary, no cafe. What you get is a flat piece of accessible land where anyone can theoretically stand and speak - and that's rather the point. The appeal lies in understanding what it represents: freedom of expression in action, however unglamorous that looks in reality.

Historically minded visitors will find it worthwhile as a working example of British civic tradition rather than a tourist spectacle. It's the sort of place you'd bring older kids interested in democracy or protest movements, or adults who care about that sort of thing. Casual family groups hunting for something visual or interactive will probably leave puzzled after ten minutes.

If you're staying at Kingfisher Holiday Park just three miles away, it's an easy diversion on a drive into Burton itself. Free to visit, naturally. Allow maybe 20 minutes unless you're genuinely keen to soak up the atmosphere or catch someone actually using it to speak. Best visited on a day when the weather's decent - standing about in the rain listening to amateur orators loses its charm quickly.
