Sparrow's Thicks

Walk far enough into Sparrow's Thicks and you'll forget you're in Suffolk. This woodland sits just east of Halesworth, a proper working forest where the trees actually feel like they're closing in around you rather than politely framing a postcard view.

It's the kind of place that rewards a slow morning. The paths wind through mixed woodland - oak, ash, the occasional surprising pine - and the further you venture, the quieter things get. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; the name didn't come from nowhere. Dog walkers absolutely love it here, and families with kids who can manage a decent walk will find enough fallen logs and streams to keep younger ones engaged without it feeling like a nature education programme.

There's nothing flashy about Sparrow's Thicks. No visitor centre, no cafe, no admission charge that I'm aware of - you just turn up and walk. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to do it justice rather than just potter about for twenty minutes. Best in spring when things are greening up, though autumn has its own thing going on with the light.

If you're based at one of the nearby spots - Dawn Chorus Holidays' glamping just 2.3 miles away is particularly lovely for families, or Henstead Fields if you want a traditional campsite - this makes a natural half-day excursion. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but that's precisely why it works. Real woodland, proper quiet, no pretence.
