Sparhawk Park

The Sparhawk wetland is proper Norfolk - reeds stretching to the horizon, water channels threading through like veins on a map, and enough bird activity to keep even casual nature watchers occupied for a couple of hours. It's a nature reserve that doesn't announce itself loudly; you won't find theme park attractions or visitor centres here, just a straightforward conservation site where the landscape does most of the talking.

Walkers and birdwatchers get the most from Sparhawk. The trails are flat and manageable, though proper wellies are sensible depending on the season - the ground can be waterlogged. You're looking at an easy hour to ninety minutes if you take the main loop, longer if you're serious about spotting marsh harriers or water voles. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour unless they're genuinely into wildlife.

The reserve sits bang in the middle of Broadland, just east of Wroxham, so it works well as a morning walk before heading to nearby Norfolk Broads Haven for a swim or a picnic. The light is best in early morning or late afternoon - the water catches it beautifully and visibility for birds improves. Spring and autumn migration seasons are when things really kick off, but even mid-summer you'll see plenty of activity if you're patient and keep the noise down.

It's free to access and unmanned, which means no queuing about but also no facilities. Bring your own binoculars and a decent camera if you've got one. Worth the detour if you're already in the Broads area.
